[CIF Central Section] Dominant efforts define day at section meetPublished by
The Fresno BeeNovember 21, 2013
Clovis North High's Leigh Moffett and Stockdale's Blake Haney dominated Division I races, Buchanan's girls captured a 14th straight D-I team title and Madera South swept boys and girls team crowns to highlight Thursday's Central Section Cross Country Championships at Woodward Park. Moffett, a year after placing second, clocked in at 17 minutes, 44 seconds on a cool, damp 3.1-mile course whose trails were packed to the runners' liking after Wednesday's rainfall. Carrying a weighted GPA of 4.1, Moffett then announced she'll follow her parents' Ivy League footsteps and attend Dartmouth and continue to compete. Her father, Michael Moffett, and mother, Maureen Sheehan, graduated from Cornell. "They grew up in New York, but never pressured me," said the daughter, who's ranked eighth in the state by PrepCalTrack.com. "I always wanted to go to an Ivy League school. I had a goal and did the best I could." Haney, ranked No. 1 nationally, coasted in the final mile to win in 15:02. Probably a week away from choosing between Stanford and Oregon, he said he thinks he could lower that time to around 14:40 at the CIF State Championships a week from Saturday at the traditional Woodward Park venue.
